The Periyar River is the longest river in Kerala, stretching over 244 km and sustaining millions of lives. Over the years, pollution, plastic waste, and neglect have degraded this vital waterway.
DARC's River Periyar Cleanup initiative brings together volunteers, local communities, and government bodies to systematically remove waste, restore riverbanks, and create awareness about river conservation.
Monthly cleanup drives along the Periyar River
Volunteers from all walks of life join our cleanup efforts
Our first cleanup drive along the Periyar River in Aluva, with 50 volunteers removing over 500 kg of waste in a single day.
Expanded to monthly drives covering 5+ locations along the Periyar, partnering with local municipalities.
Corporate teams joined our drives as part of CSR initiatives, bringing in 200+ volunteers.
Beyond cleanup, we began planting trees along riverbanks to prevent soil erosion and pollution runoff.
Plastic waste and debris accumulated along the riverbank.
